Posttetraploid gene pairs may be retained simply because certain genes with only one copy were selected against, and the backup copy is necessary intermittently As with balanced gene drive, retention can occur without duplicate divergence and without positive selection. This explanation for genes that are retained but evolve slowly has been explained as a secondary association. (Freeling 2009)
