Pileup format is first used by Tony Cox and Zemin Ning at the Sanger Institute. It desribes the base-pair information at each chromosomal position. This format facilitates SNP/indel calling and brief alignment viewing by eyes. (http://samtools.sourceforge.net/pileup.shtml )
