A method for estimating parameters by using theory to obtain a formula for the expected value of statistics measured from the data as a function of the parameter values to be estimated.The observed values of these statistics are then equated to the expected values. The formula is inverted to obtain an estimate of the parameter. (Beaumont 2004)
