The data are simplified by representation as a set of summary statistics and simulations used to draw samples from the joint distribution of parameters and summary statistics. The posterior distribution is approximated by estimating the conditional distribution of parameters in the vicinity of the summary statistics that are measured from the data avoiding the need to calculate a likelihood function.
