Effective population size (Ne)

Effective population size (Ne)search for term

the size of a randomly mating population that has the same rate of genetic drift as the population of interest. (Hamblin 2011) The size of a population measured by the expected effect (through genetic drift) of the population size on genetic variability. It is related to, but never exceeds, the true population size (N). (Hurst 2009). The size of a random mating population under a simple Fisher–Wright model that has an equivalent rate of inbreeding to that of the observed population, which might have additional complexities such as variable population size or biased sex ratio. (Beaumont 2004)
