In mathematics, a network structure is properly called a graph. The entities that are connected are called nodes and the connections are called edges. A de Bruijn graph is a graph in which the nodes are sets of symbols (similarly to the nucleotides in a sequence read) and the edges represent overlaps between the symbols. This is a convenient way to represent data, such as overlapping sequence reads. (MacLean, 2009)
