A theory that describes the genealogy of chromosomes or genes.Under many life-history schemes (discrete generations, overlapping generations, non-random mating, and so on), taking certain limits, the statistical distribution of branch lengths in genealogies follows a simple form. Coalescent theory describes this distribution. (Beaumont 2004)
