Subfunctionalization model

The current most popular model to explain duplicate retention is based on complementary loss of different dispensable parts of the cis-acting units (genes), such that it now takes two genes, both duplicates, to encode the ancestral function. The mutations are neutral knockouts and are expected to occur relatively quickly. This model is synonymous with the duplication, degeneration, and complementation (DDC) model. (Freeling 2009)
