a region of DNA associated with a particular phenotypic trait. A trait can be controlled by many genes, each having only a small effect, or by a few genes with large effect. QTLs can be used to identify candidate genes underlying a trait. (Varshney 2009). A locus that controls a quantitative phenotypic trait, identified by showing a statistical association between genetic markers surrounding the locus and phenotypic measurements. (Davey 2011)
