This is the classic (E.B. Lewis and S. Ohno) positive selection model to explain retention. This mechanism is thought to be relatively slow because new mutations must be selected positively, but the evolution of novelty involves this process eventually. This model is sometimes called the neofunctionalization model. (Freeling 2009)
